Cruise control recall. Is this dealership clueless?
Cruise control recall. Is this dealership clueless?
I have an 03 F150 4x4 and from everything I have read it is part of the recall but dealership I took it to are telling me it is not. It does not have the new fusable link in it already and when I punch in the vin number nothing comes up. I don't get it!
They won't let me buy it and put it on myself either but I am worried about my truck burning down my new garage. What size fuse is in the new link everyone has been getting? I want to add a fusable link myself if Ford Canada will not.

Well, my 2003 is not in the recall as per Ford's website, but I do notice that unlike most that have had to deal with this issue, my switch that plugs into the master cylinder assembly is metal and not plastic. Whether that was something the PO took care of, who knows, but I'm fine either way.
If you have that, you are in the good, as far as I know.
My truck is an 04/03 build date on the door jamb sticker.

The dealership I use tells me my 03 is not on the recall list also but I just dont trust it. I park my truck in the garage at my house and would never forgive myself it it burned down cause of that. I unplugged the cruise bout a year ago for peace of mine at night.

I originally wanted to get this thing and install it myself but none of the dealerships here sell it. They all said it had to be dealer installed under the recall. I called you guys and the parts guy I talked to at the time told me the same thing. Then the dealership here gets me to bring my truck in for the whole day and then tells me that my truck is not on the recall list. I read somewhere that this part is cheap so if that is the case I would rather just pay for it myself and not be too worried about burning down the house.
Is it possible that if it has already been fixed that the computer system sees it as not applicable? Just a thought.
I would get something from the dealership in writing saying that your truck is not part of the recall, then god forbid it does go up, then you have proof that you A) tried to get it fixed and B) the dealer wouldn't do it because fords system says that it is not needed.

My 03 is also clear of recall according to OASIS, but i think it has the older harness on it.
I thought it was because the harness has constant power to it even when the vehicle is off and if the switch leaks it corrodes the harness plug and shorts out possibly causing a fire as there is nothing there to stop the power. I had read somewhere that they only were replacing the switch if it was leaking. I didn't see anywhere that it was a redesigned switch. I would guess that if the switch was the real problem they would just replace the switch in all the recalled vehicles. Wouldn't they? I don't know, maybe it is cheaper to mickey mouse the harness than replace all the switches, who knows what Ford is thinking.

Search for part number.......1L1Z9F924AA
This is the switch AND harness. $12 or so.
5 minute change out job. Make sure you add a few drops of brake fluid to fill the switch before installation.

I got one from www.oemfordparts.com, waiting on the local dealer to get parts ( don't know why took them so long in 2005, TX got m the part in 3 days ).
TascaFordParts is offering to sell it to you, drop him an email. He supports the site !
If you don't want to chance it at all, bypass it, if you choose to
DISCLAIMER !!
The switch is a secondary safety device, in case of brake switch failure with the cruise engaged. Without the secondary switch, in case of brake switch failure, you will need to manually turn off the cruise control, or put the truck in neutral ! pressing the brakes without the brake switch will be like putting the brakes on, with the gas on, and can cause HARM or DEATH to yourself or others !
PERFORM THIS MOD AT YOUR OWN RISK !
Now that the disclaimer is out of the way :
An ATM fuse has the same size pins in it. Brake an ATM fuse, and solder a jumper wire between the pins.
unplug the factory harness from the brake pressure secondary safety switch, and install the jumper.
Wire tie the harness up, away from heat or moving parts.
The power to the harness is now via the jumper, and cannot cause the high resistance ground that can happen on the pressure switch, causing leaking brake fluid to ignite the engine compartment.
PERFORM THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, DOING THIS MOD CAN CAUSE HARM OR DEATH TO YOURSELF OR OTHERS.
PERFORMING THIS MODIFICATION WILL REMOVE A SECONDARY SAFETY SYSTEM FROM THE TRUCK'S CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEM !

Once more for those thinking there is no harm in doing this. Note THERE CAN BE !
