alternator issue

my alternator went out the other night on my way home and i was wondering if it would or could have anything to do with me having a winch wired to my battery. i pull a race car every weekend and we wired the winch with a fuse able line up to the battery...it is a 12V winch, and i always start my truck when we are loading it up...it may have been just time to replace it cuz it is that old...but just wondering if that would have caused it to go bad...

2000 f150 5.4L with 123,000 with a rod knock for 1,000

thanks matt
