Power Door Locks Driving Me Nuts

I recently bought a '99 F-150 4X4 with power door locks. According to the owner's manual, the doors should lock automatically when the truck is put into gear. MINE LOCK AS SOON AS THE IGNITION IS TURNED ON! I've tried the procedure outlined in the owner's manual to disable this auto-locking feature, but it doesn't work. The first step in the manual is to turn the key to "run" and press the unlock button 3 times. Well, as soon as I turn the key to "run", the doors lock immediately before I can even give the unlock button 3 presses. My horn doesn't work (clockspring), so I can't even hear the confirmation chirps.

Also, the owner's manual mentions keyless remote entry, but I never received a remote from the previous owner. I've found them cheap on eBay, so that's not a problem. While trying to disable the auto-locking feature, I also played around with the programming mode for the remotes, even though I don't have one yet. Turning the key on and off 8 times in rapid succession only yields the result of the doors locking after I turn it on the final time, just like it probably would anyway. It is my understanding from reading here that it should lock then unlock to initiate the programming mode.

Any ideas regarding either of these situations?

Well, no wonder I've been having such a hard time. I found out today that I don't have a factory-installed remote keyless entry system. Mine is a dealer-installed aftermarket system. Since this one doesn't use the standard OEM remotes, I'll probably have it changed out for a newer one with remote keyless entry and remote start. No sense in spending $100 for two remotes when I can get the newer system at the dealership for $199 installed.

Could you give me some more information about the "programming mode" that you mentioned? Can you disable the auto-lock feature in this mode?

Edit:
Deactivating/activating the autolock feature

Before following the procedure, make sure that the igntion is OFF and all vehicle doors and the liftgate window are closed.

You must complete steps 1-7 within 30 seconds or the procedure will have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, you must wait 30 seconds.

1. Turn the ignition key to RUN.
2. Press the power door unlock control three times.
3. Turn the ignition key from RUN to OFF.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to RUN. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. The horn will chirp once if the autolock was deactivated or twice (one short and one long chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Turn the ignition to OFF. The horn will chirp once to confirm the procedure is complete.

If your doors lock as soon as the ignition key is turned on, then you're screwed like me with an aftermarket system. The only system that allows the autolocks to be disabled is the factory system (which locks at 5 MPH.)
