Battery wipes out Alternator?

I knew my battery was getting bad for the last few months.. If I left the Sirius satellite receiver on overnight, the truck wouldnt start in the morning... So one morning, in the worst neighborhood in Brooklyn, my alternator craps out, and the battery can only last a couple minutes on its own... Make it to a repair shop and $350 later, I'm rolling with new alternator, belt and battery.

Now someone tells me I brought it upon myself.. They say a crappy battery will overwork the alternator, causing an eventual failure.. Is this true? I'm getting the boot ready to kick myself in the *** if it is...

Get a big boot because you don't understand the relationship!
If it will do you any good; here is some info on what and why.
The alternator has a reference circuit in it's regulator to monitor the battery voltage so it can control the alternator output.
If the battery has a bad cell causing low voltage, IT CAN NEVER BE CHARGED UP so runs the alternator at outputs that wear the brushed and overheat it excessivly.
No matter how much the alternator charges a bad battery, is has no storage capacity left.
Is that enough info to get a Kick going?
