GEM Generic Electronic Module Replacement

2003 F150, 4.2 v-6, 5 speed.

My interior lights don't work. My "key left in the ignition" gong doesn't bong and, what's worse, my windshield wipers and washer won't work--and no fuses are blown!

From my review of posts on this site and others, this sounds like the GEM Module. Who'd a thunk they'd run an essential system like wipers and washers through an expensive computer chip.

My specific questions are:

Is this a GEM problem?

If I replace the GEM must it be programmed and must it be programmed by a Ford dealer?

Does anyone have other suggestions for troubleshooting or fixing the simultaneous failure of interior lights, key gong and wipers and washers?

Thanks for any responses!

Thumbs up Possible Fix

I just picked my truck up yesterday from the shop. My radio would lose power and the wipers would sometimes not work. Also, my fan would stay on as well after turning the engine off and removing the key. This happened last week during a heavy rain. The shop said they did some research and found alot of F150's would leak and the water would run down to the fuse panel. They said it could be the GEM module, however, they would need to take apart the dash and remove the fuse panel to validate the leak, for $350. I said no thanks. The truck works fine most of the time when it is dry. They understood and said to keep an eye on the weather when it happens again. I checked the fuses and relays as well and they were fine. The next thing I may look at is the seal around the windshield and then any location below it that water may get in. Good luck! Hope this helps.
