Rebuilding an Alternator

My alternator bearings are going bad, it's started squeeling. Has anyone tried to replace theirs? Any idea where I can purchase the bearings and what the bearing numbers are? It's working properly, just bearings are going out. I have been searching for places with bearing kits or numbers without any luck.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to replace the alternator? Along with the bearings, you should replace the brushes and regulator. Why pull it lagain when these eventually fail.

Check the yellow pages for an electrical rebuild shop they should be able to rebuild it for you for about $60

It's really easy to get to and not much trouble, so I was just going to replace the bearings for now, I guess I've just never had the other parts of an alternator fail so I feel pretty confident I could get by with just the bearings and probably never need to replace any of the other parts.

Id just replace it. If the bearings are bad, chances are the brushes are soon to fail too.
You can get a rebuilt alternator with a lifetime warranty from Auto Zone for $150.
My original alternator failed at 130,00 miles and thus far I havent had any issues with the Auto Zone alternator (its a Ford alternator, they just replace the bearings, brushes and voltage regulator).
I would have prefered a Ford replacement alternator, but $300 a bit hard to swallowed.

I agree its not hard or time consuming to take the alt out of these trucks it takes me about 15 mins to do mine. once you get it out take the 3 bolts out then seperate it and theres the fist bearing. un soder the 6 wires then it pretty much falls apart and you can get at the smaller of the two bearings. i used a small socket with some tape arround the end on a rubber hammer to press the new bearins in. the hardest part is soderin the wires back on. if your good a sodering its easy. took me about an hour.

Might as well put in new brushes while it is apart they are cheap and easy to do.

I'll probably just end up buying a whole rebuilding kit and doing it myself. Probably worth the extra time and money. I was just having trouble finding a complete kit with all the parts in one package. Didn't want to be driving all over town putting it together.
