Fog light 9145 to 9006

I read on a bunch of sites that it was possible to upgrade the 9145 foglight bulb to the 9006 bulb (or 9005 bulb)........... since I wanted the black tip so as not to dazzle other drivers I picked up a pair of 9006 bulbs. I get home, compare to my 9145 and file down one of the tabs on the 9006, file down the plug groove on the inside of the 9006 and then try to fit them.......... no joy.

The bottom of the 9006 is bigger than the 9145 so I can't get it to fit back into the foglight. Its the part that has the seal on it, round plastic section at the base of the bulb. How can I get the 9006 bulb to fit in place of the 9145? As far as I can tell there is no way to make this section smaller...........

Did I read the wrong information? and in fact only the 9005 can replace the 9145? (it was more than 1 site that I read the 9006 was possible) I rarely use my foglights, but find them handy in both rain and fog at night so wanted to upgrade the bulbs.

If there is no chance of getting the 9006 to fit, how likely is it that I could exchange the bulbs at WalMart for 9005's? (even though I filed down a tab on the 9006). I would prefer to keep the 9006, but if I have to will get a 9005 instead.

Thanks.

No, they are Sylvania Xtravisions (did not want to spend $40 on Silverstars if I could not get them to fit)............. still hoping to find out how to get these 9006 to fit.

The 9005 slides right in perfectly. I have them (in Silverstars) on mine and am very happy with them.

As far as I know, you can swap (with some modification) the 9005 bulbs. I haven't heard anything about swapping 9006s, but I have in the past swapped 9006s for 9005s in a projector housing. I had to modify the tabs, but it worked. You could just go buy some 9006 pig tails from your local parts store and use the connectors in place of the 9145 connectors. If I remember correctly, both connectors should only have two wires, one + and one -.
