Engine cranks when unlock is pressed several times

Can anyone tell me about this? When I hit the unlock button a few times on my key fob, the engine will crank briefly - pause - crank briefly - pause, etc for several seconds then all is normal again. Possibly something with PATS?? The saleman at the Ford dealership where I bought it used said it was a remotre start system that just didn't work. I looked at the remote start booklet and the fob was different than the one I have. Could this be the case? Thanks for any advise!

Sounds like an aftermarket remote start. Most of them use multiple unlock pulses to kick the system on, but if it doesn't get the bypass from a relay it won't start.

Try holding the key next to, not in, the ignition and hitting the remote. If that's the problem it will start as long as the key is there. You might even find one wire tied under the trim from the remote start installation. If the keys were ever re-programmed and the one wire tied under the trim was not re-entered then it won't want to start without a valid key.

Ok, I just tried it. The truck will start ONLY if the key is actually in the ignition. Holding it close won't do it. It does not have to be turned on, just pushed into the ignition. Strange? I haven't had time to look for a wire under the trim. How would I go about finding out what brand of remote start this is? Any help appreciated as a remote start will come in very handy this winter!!
