Question 2000 F150 5.4l Alternator problem?

I'm pretty sure it's the alternator but I just want to double check here.

I installed a new batter about 3 months ago and for the last 3 days I noticed that the battery warning light was coming on. Now you can pretty much do about 8 to 10 km on battery alone and with a trickle charge from the alternator you can probably do a few miles a day.

Anyway, I went to pick up some lumber today and noticed that the battery charge was almost down to zero volts. The radio wouldn't work and the windows wouldn't roll up but the engine was still running. Managed to make it home and now it's dead.

I'm pretty sure that it's not charging the battery any longer and have to change the alternator but whats stumping me is that after a few hours the truck starts normally without even a hickup

What are you're thoughts and is there a more accurate way to make sure it's the alternator ( I have a multimeter ) to double check?

My 97 did the same thing when the alt went. All the acc. went dead on the way to work and when I stopped the truck died. I figured I would have to get a ride home but when I got off work the truck fired up and I drove 12 miles home with no accesories. Pulled the alt off and got a new one and everything worked fine.

My alternator started dying by giving me the ALT light only at high RPM. It then got worse to the point where the light was on all the time.

I found a guy on E bay who sold new alternators removed from vans that were converted to ambulances. They install a much larger alternator (the reason for the removal). It was a much better price than a new or rebuilt unit from any local store around here.

Alternator

It is likely the alternator...I have the same truck and mine died last January...Light went on and off and then finally stayed on and took no time at all for the veh to shut down on me...it was at night and I had the lights on.
.
Put a good charge on it and drive to the local repair shop...in the day time...you'll have longer to get there...Good luck.

Yup, it was the alternator. Changed and all is fine. Now to work on replacing the rear gasket seal where the transaxle enters the rear differential.:o
