neutral safety switch is fubar, 1985 F250 auto trans
hi there well i was having a problem with the shifter being sloppy and the truck not cranking in park or neutral unless i really messed with the shifter alot,
well i got under the truck and found that the tranny has a switch unit on the shift shaft parts,
i saw that red with blue stripe is the solenoid wire color,
i found two separate such wires off the tranny switch
so i put them together
it starts up perfect like brand new now
i did do this correctly right ?
just making sure for sure
before i make it permanent
thanks

i guess technically hteres no correct way
yeah im sure a switch is inexpensive, but something is slopped in the column and i dont think a switch alone would fix it anyways
plus im sure the switch is actually fine
something in the column is fubar actually
what i have no idea
anyone have any idea what causes all the slop in the shifter on these ?
would be lots of PITA troubble to replace/adjust the switch, its more involving than id like to get, id rather do a timing set or a head job than this,
im a nut and bolt and grease type of person, not a little switch and wires type, although i did manage to remove the aftermarket resistor switch and wires someone added to the truck for the heater blower motor,
all it was was a burnt fuse, good as new, works all three speeds like its supposed to and now the truck has no non factory wiring or switches in it anymore all except for the trailer brake unit
crazy ppl...
i like my trucks without any aftermarket stupid crap added into them, especialyl electrical,
one of the very first things i do when i get a truck is remove any such things, and clean it all up back to stock factory
but this is kind of stuff is still not my specialty at all, neither is body work, not one bit,
im better off just avoiding any of it whenever possible, but i am capable enough to get by and get it done anyways,
thanks for any further

There are nylon bushings in the shift linkage from the column (just forward of the firewall) down to the trans lever. Take a look at them to find the slop. Otherwise, it's just 22 years of wear inside the column.

A new switch isn't THAT expensive, and it's easy to install.
