Exclamation Erratic Tach

Hello,

The tach in my 2001 Screw has been acting up lately. When you first start up and drive off it works fine but after a while it is like it sticks at the RPM and if you speed up or slow down instead of going smoothy up or down it sticks and then finally jumps to the new RPM. Has anyone experienced this? Is there any way to fix this besides replacing the whole cluster?

Thanks,

Layne

Check your RPM readings directly off the OBDII connector with your scanner.

If the scan tool is stable but the tach is erratic, then yes, you do need a new cluster.

If your vehicle is PATS-equipped, you will require a dealer to reprogram the cluster after replacement. It is not a DIY project under these circumstances (well swapping the cluster is, getting the engine to run afterwards isn't). The correct service procedure calls for uploading the current cluster data into the scanner, mechanically swapping the cluster, then downloading the saved data into the new cluster.
