How to disable door and head lamp chime
How to disable door and head lamp chime
---->I am writing this for whoever is fed-up, with Ford's annoying chimes.
I have a 1998 ford f150 Nascar truck, and for the past 3 years have been irritated with the loud door chime that somtimes will stay on, even with my door closed. I temporarily got rid of this annoyance by taking the fuse out, which disabled the windshield wipers, cab light, and the chime... When it rained I would put the fuse back in to have windshield wipers again...So here it is:
1. (How to disable the door chime when ignition is off): Use a Phillips screwdriver to take the 3 screws out from the bottom of the steering column cover. After you take them out and pull back the bottom cover, look inside and underneath you will see wires located by the ignition switch. One of which is black with a pink purple-ish stripe, kind of by itself. You now have two options: cut the wire (after cutting, use electrical tape on exposed wire) or just un-clip it from where it connects to the ignition (un-clipping it was easier for me) *Doing this procedure made the chime sound, twice as fast and twice as annoying with the head lamps on and the ignition off--->leading me to take this action:
2. (How to disable the chime when the ignition is off and the headlights are on): Act like you are about to turn on the headlights and instead of turning them on, give that switch a slight pull and the small panel should pop out. Now behind that front switch panel is a secondary panel that needs to come out. You can either pry it out with a flat head screwdriver, or the easy way: using your right thumb and your index finger, there is a spring loaded release lever located directly in the middle, that you can pinch to easily pull out. (Thumb on spring loaded release and index finger on dimmer ****, just pinch and pull. After getting the secondary panel out you will see on the back side are two seperate wire plugs with five wires in each. Unplug the one on the left. There is going to be 3 wires on bottom and 2 on top. The colors of the bottom wires are from left to right: (1): dark brownish, blackish (2): dark tan (3): Orange---->Then on top are 2 wires from left to right (1): blue with white strip (2) yellow with red stripe. Now snip that yellow with red stripe wire 2 inches back and tape it with electrical tape to make sure the wire is not exposed...it's just that easy! I tested the wires and the the yellow/red wire ony controls the chime.
3: Now as for turning the chime off when the radio is on (ignition in back position): I think the best bet is to take the door panel off and snip the wire that controls the chime. I don't know which wire it is, but I will find out. (This I've heard, will also disable the dome light, but I think would actually prefer it not to come on, especially at night when I deliver pizza's part-time and like being in stealth mode as I get out of my truck. Anyways, I already have 2 other reading lights I can turn on.
I'm glad I figured out how to get out of my truck with my engine off and leave my headlights on and not have to hear a chime from hell!
Well I hope this helps someone out!

brilliant!
Well it's taken four years for anyone to acknowledge your amazing wisdom, but I'll say it worked perfectly. The chime went nuts just by opening the driver door and no key on the ignition, and it was making me insane. Option 1 did the trick: look for the purplish-black wire under the steering wheel and pull it, or cut it, I forget which I did. The connection could easily be remade.
No repercussions noticed so far, except sweet silence while I work on the real problem: getting the truck to start every time I turn the key.
This is a 97 F-150 4.2L 6-cyl with no frills, no A/C, longest bed and smallest cab, 230k on the odometer. I have no experience as an auto mechanic, so these small victories are especially gratifying.
