power mirrors

i have a 97 xlt and my drivers side mirror sometimes doesnt work up, down, left, right nothing. and other times the left, right works but never the u, down im guessing loose wires but where. please help

Start with do you have the same problem with the pass side mirror ?

This is due to the fact that the X-Y axis controller uses the same contacts for both mirrors, just changes which it is sending it to with the L-R switch.

If it is just the driver's side, then I would think the connector behind the sail panel, or the motor in the mirror itself is starting to take a powder. ?

sail panel? and it is only the drivers side

The sail panel is the triangle part of the mirror that is mounted to the door.

Take off your interior door panel, and check the connector there first. The other item is it could be the motors in the mirror itself, but checking the connector first is a good starting point.

ok so i took my door paner off took th 3 nuts holding the mirror on and i looked at my wire harness no chafing or anything like that. so could it be the wires connecting the mirror motor or where everything goes into the door

Considering that is something like 16" of wire from the sail panel to the switch, I would say it is not that.

My guess would be the motor in the mirror itself.

The contacts in the directional switch are fine, if the pass side works correctly, and you said the connector looks fine. Leaves the mirror itself.
