Remote mirror control
Remote mirror control
Since I'm actively working on getting my truck back in working order and top shape I thought I'd ask about this. On both my 97 (don't own anymore) and 01 F-150's the 4 way switch for controlling the mirrors has lost the 'left' function. Why is that? A buddy of mine had the same problem on his 03 and his boss had it on his 04. You can move the mirrors up, down, and to the right, but not to the left. Is it a bad switch? Bad design? Does water corrode the contacts? Can it be fixed without having to replace the switch?
I'm not sure how to say this.........
It's possible to manualy push on the mirror outside and get it to pop over a few notches to extend your vision. This could throw the gear drive out of sink or give you more range without moving the entire head.
I found this out by accident. I bumped into my mirror while washing it and it moved the mirror. Then when I was driving later on I tried adjusting it and it wouldn't move. It would however try to drive the mirror and make a popping sound from the gears jumping? I thought I broke it and figured it was a POS.
When I stopped I pushed it over by hand.(just the mirror not the whole head)
It popped as I moved it but must have gotten it back in the correct spot on the nylon gear rack. Now it works fine.
Not sure if this makes sense. You didn't say if was dead electricaly or just not moving in that one direction.
Hope this helps someone. Kinda common sense but U Know......
I'd like to know how to get in there and have a look without breaking it all to heck. I think the mirror is just glued onto a plastic plate with a ball socket in the back.

I had a somewhat similar problem with my 01 Scab. My mirrors would adjust inward but not outward. I got some advice on this site
to pop the switch out of the door take it apart (pretty easy if you pay attention to how it looks so you can put it back together) and clean it with electric parts cleaner ($5 for a can). After I did that my mirrors worked like new. The whole process was maybe 20 minutes.
