Cool Flickering Headlight and dashlights

I drive a 98 f-150 w/176k miles and noticed for the first time the headlights and the dash lights flickering and noticed the amp gauge reading low (disc side) when i turned the lights off and ran w/running lights the gauge read less of a discharge, am i seeing signs of an impending batt. failure or new alt. in my future?

How old is the battery? I'd get the alt tested first. If it turns out ok, start battery shopping.

You need to pop the hood and check some things.
What is your battery voltage w/ engine off?
When running?
Is the belt slipping?
Is there voltage drop between the battery post and the terminal on either side?
Resistance reading from one end of the cable to the other? (Check all connections)
