Unhappy Heating problem...not sure what to do

I have a 03 F150 supercrew FX4...sometimes the heat will start blowing cold air untill the motor temp is almost in the red, then the heat starts coming out again. It does this randomly while driving. Any ideas what could be going on?

First thing we need to know if it is a manuel or EATAC control system.

Thermostat is sticking closed I suspect... It shouldn't take a hot engine to allow hot coolant to the heater core.
