Accessories off while engine running

My '84 F150 has developed a wierd problem. The fan, gauges, and blinkers all work when the truck engine is NOT running and the key is in the "run" position. If the engine is running, they do not work. Alternator and battery all appear to be fine. I originally suspected the ignition switch, but since it is in the "run" position when things work (engine off) and when they don't (engine running) I don't think it's the problem. Headlights and tail lights work OK. Any ideas? Thanks

You have a tilt/cruise column, right? Go to FSB's Tech Writeups forum & search up the thread about "ignition actuators".

That truck doesn't have any solenoids that affect the charging system, or the accessories.

Steve83,

No tilt or cruise. Just a basic 350 V8, 4-speed manual, AM radio -- nothin' fancy. Would the ignition switch still be the likely culprit?

You have a CHEVY engine in your Ford truck?

It's a 351.

Yes, it's most likely a bad ig.sw. The Haynes manual has a logic table for it in the last chapter. If you can find an old version with the RED cover (880/36058), that's the best one for your truck.

350, 351, whatever it takes...

(I used to have a '73 Pontiac with a 350)

Thanks for the advice. I will check into that manual.
