Need dash power supply for Homelink

I want to know if I tap into the power supply for the lighter for my new Homelink if that would be too much for that fuse? I don't think the Homelink uses that much and I would never need both at the same time. I want to mount the Homelink in the dash area and don't know of another constant hot source.

the lighter is on all the time so that means that your homelink will be on all the time if you leave your truck outside everynight its not worth it because someone can use it to open your garage and get into your house, some people have used the visor mirror wire or you can run it to the radio that way it wont work if the truck aint on. it wont be overloading unless you use that power supply for everyday things like cell phones chargers and other accessories that require alot of power.

If you are tapping into one of the 12v plugs, use the power outlet, not the cigar lighter. The Cigar lighter also powers the ODB-II port, which is not a big thing unless you plug in a ODB-II/CAN bus scanner.

The power outlet and the cigar lighter are both fused 20 A, so you would have to put quite a bit on them, in addition to the Homelink to cause a fuse to blow.

The other option is to wire it to the Batt Saver / Accy delay ckt in the overhead console ( non rail is the one I am talking about ), if you do not think the unit is too large to have up there.

Light Blue = +12v
Black = Ground

This requires the key to be in the Assy or run position to be on, which I think is what polo2005 was writing about in his post.
This is the same circuit that I used for my V1 radar detector.

If you are setteled on the dash mounting, then the power windows or audio are quick batt saver / accy delay circuits to grab.

The power to the visor is on all the time, at least my '06 with the homelink works without the key, as well as the illuminated visors mirrors.

When I installed the Nav visors ( dual visors, homelink, and illuminated mirror ) in my '01 XLT, I used the factory connector on harness behind the roof panel over the drivers door, same operation as my '06, powered without the key.

Thanks for the info, I might try the power window line. I can't really do it overhead as I have a moonroof plus I'm not that mechanically inclined and don't want the Homelink to look bad.
