New key replacement questions:

Vehicle came with only one key. Am going to buy another key. I assume the key is coded/chipped, will the key be read and matched by a dealer? If the replacement key is bought can I then program the truck to accept it? I'm an Certified Technitian with All Data access at work. I haven't checked it yet but I will. Just no patience to wait. Lol T

You need special equipment if you have a key with a chip in it. Do not go to a dealer, they are SUPER expensive. Check with several locksmiths in your area, prices vary widely. My daughter just had to have a new key made when she lost one key. The locksmith she found wanted $55 dollars for one key and $75 for 2 keys.

Just look in the head of the key for a tiny tubular module - the PATS transponder. If it's not there, you don't have to worry about it - any plain key will work.

If it IS there, see above...

If you have an '05 F-150, you have a PATS-equipped truck. You can program additional keys yourself provided you have two working keys to start with. No need to pay a dealer or locksmith if you have two working keys.

If you only have one, you're SOL. Call around... I found that, in my area, the local locksmiths charged an hour's labor where my dealership only charged 1/2 hour. I let the dealer do it.

Does anyone know if a 2003 F150 key would have a chip in it? Please let me know. Thanks

It's optional. Just look at the head of the key. IIRC, the transponder slips in from the cut side of the head.

I have a 2000 150 and its has the transponder type key. I bought the key blank from Ebay for about 7 bucks. Had ace hardware cut the key for 1.50. And of course Ford charged me 45 bucks to program or whatever the heck it is. All in all, about $54 for a key, RIDICULOUS!

Be glad you don't own a Land Rover. A replacement key can be nearly $1,000.

1999 and newer are all PATS keys, not an option.

Take a look in your owners manual under SECURILOCK PASSIVE ANTI-THEFT SYSTEM. This should be in the features section of the manual.

The key has the RF ID tag in the head of the key, nothing to insert after cutting.
