Extend Retained Accessory Power to Stereo!

Later models may already do this, but while I'm glad Ford allowed me to put up my windows after turning off the key in my '99, I also wanted the radio to stay on, as well. I searched here and couldn't find where this had been posted, so I traced some wires, made some notes, and went ahead and did it. The mod was relatively simple.

Needed
1 - In-line mini fuse-holder and 5A fuse
1 - 14/16 Ga 3M squeeze tap connector
2 - 18-22 Ga Female insulated spade connectors*
1 - 18-22 Ga Male insulated spade connectors*
* If you want the mod to be easily reversible. Solder/tape or butt-splice if you don't.
~6 feet of #18GA Wire
Wire ties
coat hanger wire (to pull wire)
Solder and Electrical tape (or butt-splice connector)
Wire cutters
stereo removal tools

The Procedure
1) Disconnect the negative battery terminal
2) Remove driver's side kick panel (Requires removal of sill plate as well)
3) Remove stereo surround trim
4) Remove and disconnect head unit. Set aside.
5) Locate three harness connectors inside left kick panel area, just to the left of the parking brake pedal.
6) Solder or but-splice the fuse-holder to the end of the new wire.
7) Locate the light blue/black-striped wire in the middle connector. (Power window power)
8) Using Squeeze tap conector, connect fused end of #18ga wire assembly to the light blue/black stripe wire as shown below.

9) Route #18 Ga Wire to head unit area, allowing a bit of slack for head-unit reconnection. (Be careful to avoid moving parts and/or sharp edges.)
10) Strip back sufficient wire wrap to expose about 2"" of harness.
11) Locate black wire with pink stripe.
12) Cut and strip (3/8") this wire about 1" from the connector.
13) Install female quick connects on the end of the new wire and on the end of the black/pink wire now not connected to the head unit connector.
14) Install male quick connect to the black/pink wire conected to head unit connector.
15) Connect new wire to black/pink wire from connector as shown below.

16) Use wire ties to secure new wire under dash.
17) Re-install head unit, trim, kick panel and sill.
18) Re-connect battery
19) Close doors.
20) Turn on ignition.
21) Insure Radio is turned on.
22) Turn off and remove key.
23 Be pleased and amazed when the radio stays on.
24) Enjoy the music for a bit.
25) Open the door, be amazed again when the radio turns off.
26) Pat yourself on the back, and go enjoy your favorite cool beverage!

Of course, the usual disclaimers apply.

No comments? Well, at least nobody said I was nuts, and my truck was gonna blow up. Maybe this has been posted eleventy-billion times before, and I didn't see it?

Very good mod. Thanks for posting, did it tonight. Probably the best mod for money spent that I have ever done to a truck. Thanks again.

Glad it worked, Jared.

Anything above need to be tweaked? (Posted the instructions after the fact, and could have missed something.)

I've had my '99 for 2 weeks now and one of the little things that I've been looking into/searching the forums for is how to fix my radio because it shuts off with the key and not with opening a door like the power windows did. Owners manual claims the radio has this feature, but from what you've said it looks like that may be a lie. You've saved me a lot of headaches searching for the right power wire to tap into. Thanx a bunch. Oh, and i'll be using the same wire to power my add-on sat radio and home-made sub's signal wire . Thanks again.
