Angry Windows not working- found reason why!

guys,
has anyone else had this issue? I did a search in the forums and didnt see anything...here goes -
both driver and pass windows in my 99f150 intermittantly stopped working - then worked again - finally pulled off door panels on each side and traced power all the way to each window motor - it looks like there is a switch/relay inside each window motor that is acting up - if I take a small hammer and tap the motor casing, the window starts working again -
This is a major pita to deal with when you put window down and it wont come back up! Anyone seen this - since the window motors are rivited in the frame, its not so each to remove (vs taking out bolts). I am sure the motors arent cheap either - this SUCKS!! - ok done venting for at least 3 minutes...

Try the search term Power Window Motor limited to the Electrical Forum.

71 threads ( one of them is this thread ).

Here is one that describes how to remove the motor itself, if that is in fact your problem.

Hey astroman, I took the motor out of my pass. side by drilling out the rivets. Took the gear casing apart, and found that there are worm gears inside. They are made of vinyl or some plastic compound, and they came apart. You can buy replacements, so check that first. When I put the motor back back on the door, I used bolts that were big enough to pass through the rivet hole, passed them from the outside in towards the cab so the window would'nt hit the bolt, (just long enough to get the nut on) and then used nuts that have vinyl inserts inside so they would'nt vibrate loose. After I was done, my neighbors' friend the auto glass guy told me I should have used the rivets because the bolts will shear. It's been 7 months now, and no problems yet. Take your time, keep your head, and it's not really that bad a job. Good luck. Peace, Dave.

power windows

I had the power window in my '92 f150 fail. Thought I would need a new motor. My friend who is a parts manager sold me a new "gear set" for the motor. My motor was held in by three bolts, not rivets. I had to drill (2) 1/2 holes to get to the bolts but Ford marked the spots with "dimples." I took out the motor, replaced the gear set and reinstalled the motor and it works fine. Hope this helps.
