Crank but want start

I have a 2000 F-150. I went out to start it and all it did was crank but not start. I noticed that where the odometer is When I turned the key on there was no mileagge just dashes across. Then I turned the key on and off a few times and the mileage appeared when it did I tried starting it and it fired. When the dashes appear it will not start but when the mileage appears it starts Can you help me out?

sounds like a P.A.T.S issue :-(

have you tried using another key? if so does it start everytime or still every once in a while ?

tj03f150 brings up a point you do not make note of in the symptoms.

When you have the crank no start :
1. Is the Theft light on ( blinking fast I do believe is the correct description ).
2. When you turn the key on, do you hear the Fuel pump cycle ?
2.1. You can check with a rag, under the schrader valve on the fuel rail, to see if you have pressure. WEAR SAFTEY GLASSES !! when you do this ( legal disclaimer ).
3. When you turn on the truck, and get dashes across the Odometer area, do the items like the power windows ( auto down ) or radio work ?
3.1. question re the GEM.

If we can get some additional info on the symptoms, it would go a long way in helping diagnose the problem.

I am asking the questions above :
1. Like tj03f150 mentioned, maybe a PATS issue, but I would think more along the lines fo the reciever, not the key..but need to know the status of the theft light to offer a direction there.

2. Maybe a bad fuel pump, or fuel pump relay, sound of it when you first turn the key on, and / or the pressure on the rail will help answer this.

3. The windshield leak, soaking the GEM, again don't know enough to point at this, so don't read too much into it at the moment.

Thanks
