Start out with :

1. What size engine do you have ?
2. Is it Coil On Plug engine ?
2.1. I have no idea if the 4.2 is a coil pack still on the newer engines like previous years.
3. What mfgr tach are you looking at ?
4. What is the build date of your truck ?

If you read the FAQ on Autometers web page ( as a SWAG at one of the gauge mfgrs ):
..<snip>>...with all this in mind, we are trying to do everything we can to stay compatible with the later model ignition systems, but don't always have the answer. We STRONGLY urge you if you are looking to purchase one of our products that you check the ignition system first, to see what you have to work with, then step two should be to call us and inquire about the compatibility with your specific vehicle.
I could not find a Clean Tach output signal in the 2005 EVTM, but the '04 could be different.

So, figure out the mfgr of the tach you are looking at, check the specs on it under the Tech Support sections, and if they say to call or email them, get the info and email them. They might know where to find a CTO at for your year. Sorry I don't have better answer, only better questions....

Maybe someone will be along with the install already completed, and let you know an exact answer for the tach they installed.

You need an adaptor. Autometer sells one for 40-80 bucks. They are on e-bay sometimes.
One guy posted that his worked without the tach adaptor. Can't speak to that, didn't see it.
Search in the 04-06 forum for ten-fifteen threads on it. The exact wire is covered there also.

Cheap way out is to buy a ScanGauge and use the tach in it.
Putting in an XLT or FX4 cluster is easy, but costly.
Chris
