My reverse lights stay on???

2001 F-150 w/ "L" tails & fog light mod. I have the M50D 5-speed with Hurst short-throw.

Hopped on the highway today and my wife happened to be behind me. She called me on my cell and said my reverse lights had just came on all the sudden while driving. I had only been on the highway for about 10 min. after just reversing out of my parking spot. They come on now and stay on whenever the key is in the start / run position, but not the accessory position. No matter what I do, they will not go out otherwise. What could be causing this? Thanks!!!

Backup light switch is either shorted or stuck in the ON position (possible misadjustment)..

Thanks man, I wiggled the 2 sensors on the tranny and the 2 on the x-fer case and the lights are back to normal...for now anyway. My buddy @ the dealership said there was a non-mandatory recall on the "neutral safety switch" by the brake pedal that it could be too. May try that first. Is that the same deal you're talking about?

I guess there is some sort of check ball type switch on the top side of the tranny that can sometimes stick. Does anyone have any experience with this?

The reversing lamp switch is mounted on the top left side of the main housing, just behind the bell housing.

IIRC, it does have a ball in there as part of the switch. Maybe you can lube it in the event it's sticky.

There's nothing on or near the brake pedal that has anything to do with the reversing lights on a manual-equipped truck.

Thanks man!!! You think this might be my issue? Should I lube the new one? With grease or heavy oil?

Any special tools or processes in replacing? Teflon tape, gaskets, etc?

I put a little lube (Mobil-1 20w50) on the check ball of the new switch and installed it. When I removed the old one I noticed it weeping out a little tranny fluid and a BIG woosh of air pressure. As soon as it got close to the end the switch and a rod came shooting out of there with pretty significant force. I quickly popped the rod back into place and installed the new switch. Hope this helps, will post back with results. The old one seemed fine as far as I could tell...I'm thinking it needed to vent...???
