problems starting

hey everyone,
i drive a 2001 F-150 ext. cab 4x4 5.4L 7700GVW. i'm new to this forum, and was hoping someone could help. here's whats going on: sometimes (at random) when i go to crank up, everything just dies. i can turn it to the first on place on the ignition, but when i procced to the start position, all the gauges, lights, everything will shut off. after that, it will not start again (nothing happens when i turn the key). if i jump it, it will start, but if i pull the poss. wire from the terminal and put it back on, it sort of resets everything and will start again. another thing to note is everyonce in a while (when starting or coming to a complete stop) the spedometer needle will flip up to 100 and back to 0. i have no clue about that part of it, but i suspect thats where things started. the first time the spedometer did that was a few days before the first time its died. that time i was stopping at a light. since then it has died another 2 times and each time starting up after being restet, the needle will do the flip thing. i've read through everything i could think of in my haynes manual...i did the tests for the starter relay and solenoid, they seem to be fine. the battery has fluid and my tester said it was in the good range after a 10 second load. altenator works well. the book also said something about a tranny clutch sensor, but the tranny was replaced about 25000 miles ago (like 1.5 years), and it doesn't seem like that. i cranked succesfully about 30 times between the first and second times. between the second and third, i only got about 10, so its becoming more and more of a problem.
that's everything i can think of. if anyone can help please email me at kyle.r.fisk@sfcc.edu. or i guess you could relpy to these posts, so i keep and eye out. thanks everyone.
