Hey everybody, this is my first thread ever so ill try my best. Anyways, my buddy has an 04 explorer and when he is driving the Fuel Gauge needle drops down to EMPTY, then back into the normal position and the CHECK ENGINE light turns on. He has taken it to a local Ford dealer and all they do is clear the trouble light. This has occurred a couple times. Any ideas on whats going on?

 

Does the explorer have a problem at all wth accelerating, like a lag in take off or something similar? It could be a sign that the fuel pump is going out. I recently had this problem. The fuel gauge acted similar and then my pump died.
