Electric Air Conditioner, Is It Possible ?????????

Sorry for the stupid question guys, but is it possible to make an electric engine to run a 2006 f-150 super crew stock air contioner or that is PHISICALLY impossible ? Thanks a lot.

You can design one using Peltier Devices. Its been done before, by some kids from a high school for a science fair project. THey used an electric motors to run the system.

A Peltier system would not be ever close to practical. We use them a lot, not only would they cost a fortune, they generate a LOT of heat. On a car/truck they would not be an optimum solution.

On the using a 3-6 horsepower electric motor to power the A/C compressor, it would be a 'show car' type thing to do.

You would have to replumb the A/C, not a job for anyone that has to ask what's involved.

You would be adding about 50 lbs to the system.

The drag from the electric motor would require a much larger alternator which would draw more horsepower than the A/C compressor draws.

The only advantage would be that you could mount the whole A/C unit in the bed, then run the system with the truck engine off. Full A/C while sitting. Except you would have to add several batteries to the system so you wouldn’t eat the battery in minutes. Overall, it would be easier to add a small A/C air-conditioner and a voltage inverter.

Why would he have to replumb the system? You can put an electrically driven condensor in the stock location using brackets. It wouldn't necessarily draw more horsepower, especially if you use a scroll compressor (which are good at low RPM's). Compressors are usually most efficient in a narrow operating range at which an electric motor could run it better than an engine. Also, you could run the A/C at a lower rate than the stock, it wouldn't necessarily get as cold, but not everyone needs a high capacity.

As for current, use pulse width modulation to keep the current draw low.

Electric as in......pull up to a spot and plug it into an outlet?

I've never seen it done, but I bet campers have a system like that.
