I just bought the 98 Lariat and the Cruise Control light dosen't light up when the cruise is activated. What is required to replace and how do you locate the burned out bulb is?

It is one of the dash lights, so it requires taking the cluster out of the dash, and replacing the bulb. Might as well replace them all while you are at it.

The replacement guide at Sylvania shows :
Instrument-general
161
194
194LL Long Life Upgrade: Up to twice the life of the standard lamp
37

Hi-beam indicator
194
194LL Long Life Upgrade: Up to twice the life of the standard lamp

I have seen posts where memebers say they only used 194's for the whole dash ( no 161/37's ), but I don't know how that is. ???

If you want to test the Cruise system ( inlcuding the bulb ) :

There is a self test in the cruise control system.
With the key off depress and hold the cruise control off button while turning the ignition to the run position, dont start the truck, the cruise light will flash once to let you know it is in selftest.
Five additional flashes indacate a bad cruise control servo

Release the cruise off switch and within 5 seconds depress the other switches in sequence:
1. on
2. resume
3. coast
4. set/ accel
The speed control light will flash as each switch is depressed.

If the last one does not flash it may then flash a code

After this the cruise will move the throttle to test the actuator and the cable.
Make sure the trottle returns to idle and turn the key off.

It would be very very difficult to locate where the burned out bulb is because it doesn't have a bulb.

There is no Cruise Activation Light Indicator on a 1998 Lariat.
Since you didn't know this, it was logical for you to assume that a bulb was out.
(Please, do not tear your dash apart. If you have, you can start putting back together now)

Welcome to the site.

p.s.
I have a 1999 model and SSCULLY has a 2006 so, who ya gonna believe?

Raoul is right...started in late 99 models....and he is our resident light bulb expert...just a few weeks back he even changed a Toyota's brake light.

Ouch..that was almost a bad thing. My '01 SCrew had the light...so WTF do I know ?
I don't even know if the procedure for testing the cruise would work on a '98 then...considering there is no light, to know if the switch made the connection past the clock spring....

Raoul...you may pass bad checks, and do un-natural things to goats, but your are still ok in my book.

It's good to know the '01 had a cruise light.
The 97-99 didn't.

That just leaves the 2000 model.
If he had a 2000, I would have just instead of taking cheap shots at you.

Where would the fun be in that. ?

I forget some things don't cross back to the 97-99 series from the 00-03's. This is one case where I should have pulled a manual from fleetford, and read it first ( guess pburgburt could have done that also...how is that for a cheap shot ?? )
