Reverse Lamp Strobes

Have an 04 supercrew and am going to mount strobe lights in the taillight housing next to the reverse lamps and wire them in to come on when transmission is shifted into reverse. Anyone know where I can catch the circuit from the tranny to the reverse lamps to wire in the strobe controller? Thanks

Sure. Right outside the lamp housing in the cable coming to it.
I can't tell you the color code but it's there.
Use a test lite.

The question I would have is:

- How much power does the Strobe unit draw ? I know 2 AMPS on the reverse lamps is too much of a load, and the unit might not draw enough to fire the strobe lamps.

I found this when I installed my LED backup lamps. They draw 1 AMP each, and would not run at full brightness, until I put them on the reversing circuit for the 7 pin tow plug.

Just a thought, depending on the size of the strobe controller.

So you went to the factory trailer plug at the rear bumper to wire in your LED's? Did you use a test light to identify the reversing circuit or how did determine which one it was? Thanks

I got the idea from JMC. The one that the 2001 EVTM shows as beign the reversing circuit is the black with a light green stripe, circuit #C963

This requiress the relay & fuse in the battery junction box ( parts included if you bought the factory tow package ). This is feed off fuse #5, a 20 AMP fuse.

This wire is part of the 7 pin adapter, and is the center pin in a 7 pin round trailer connector.

If you don't have the factory 7 pin connector, let me know, and we will try to find it somewhere up the harness in the truck, for you to splice onto.

Do you happen to know fi the strobe controller you have draws mroe then 2 AMPS ? I don't recall which one you said yo got ( Whelen, Galls, etc ).

Hey Scully - Strobe supplier told me that the power supply pulls three amps. I guess this means I need to wire into the 7-pin??

Oh yes. I know that the 1 AMP LED backup lamps did not come to full brightness when I first put them on the backup lamps in the tail lamp housing.
I only tried them 1 or 2 times on the backup lamp, prior to moving them, so something tells me long term I could have damaged the switch in the trans.

Going to the reversing circuit is the best bet. If you feel like it, put a 5AMP fuse between the pin#7 and the strobe unit ( where ever you mount that at. ).
