4 Plug to 5 Plug for trailers........

On a '03 F-150 4x4, how do I convert from a 4 wire plug to a 5 wire plug? Is it as simple as a new harness, or do I need to trace a wire down and splice? I am no electrical genius, but if someone can provide some instrcutions, I can do it........

I would check with your local auto parts store and see if they make an adapter. It would be the easiest route.

--nevermind. I did a quick check and didn't see any 4-way to 5-way adapters.

This is just a thought, going from 7pin to 5 pin might be easier.
Hoppy is the brand that makes 7 pin adapters and vehicle specific kits, if you get a 7 pin on the truck, then get a 7 pin to flat 5 adapter ( I take it you are loking for a flat 5, this is the only one I have found in 5 pin ).

This is an example of what the kit looks like :

If you have a hitch / snow plow place around, they usually stock them, or a U-Haul place. I can't recall if I have seen them at AutoZone or the likes. Maybe Napa ?? ( always get the tow kit on my trucks, so 7 pin is already there, and my trailers are all 7 pin ).

After getting the 7 pin the adapter to flat 5 :

That is about the only way I can think to get to flat 5 in an easy way, and with this, if needed you can go to round 6 with a different adapter.

This is the easy plug and play method, so if you are not all that good with electrical, you can't mess this up. If you'd rather try the splice method, let me know, and I can dig up the flat 5 pin out, and get you a wire to splice to.

Good luck

I agree with SScully, if you have the factory 7-pin plug, you can easily get an adapter that goes from the 7-pin to a 5-flat. That is what I use with my ski boat.

If you do not have the 7-pin plug, then you can change the 4 to a 5 fairly easy. If I remember correctly, the 5th plug is to deactivate the trailer brakes whenever you put the vehicle in reverse, so it should just be a matter of connecting the fifth wire to your backup lights. All other wires will connect the same as your current 4-flat plug.
