Unhappy Tail light problems

I am having problems with my tail lights on my 1978 f150. Does anyone know what I can do? When I turn my lights on all lights work. But as soon a use brake tail lights go out ,have no brake lights. Someone said it may be in the stearing column???? If so how can I fix my problem? Thanks snakeman2

With older cars (which yours definitely qualifies), that's an indication of a bad ground in the rear. (I'm not sure if the old fords used the bumper as a ground, or ran a seperate wire.) Of course, my theory is blown out of the water if your turn signals actually work correctly. Do your brake lights work correctly when the lights aren't on?
