interior light relays
interior light relays
I am still having a problem with my dome and truck bed light staying on for around 50 seconds after the door has been shut. It does this quite a bit but sometimes the lights work fine and go out as soon as the door is shut. This is on a 97 F150 extended cab. I have done the WD 40 spray fix and it stopped the problem of the door ajar light coming on so I am fairly certain that the door switches are not the problem. There are two small relays in the fuse compartment in the left side of the dash. When the dome and truck bed lights go off, you can put your fingers on these relays and feel them click. I am wondering if there is a chance that one of these relays is hanging up and letting the lights stay on for longer than they should. Has anyone else had any experiance with having to replace these relays. Should I try replacing them or am I just wasting money? Thanks for the help
Info from 2001 EVTM
I was under the understanding ( or misunderstanding ) that the count down time was a function of the GEM ( or is that RAP / CSM ? I didn't thinlk so ). The light relay by the drawings seems to be a regular relay in the central junction box.
The battery saver relay feeds the coil for the interior lamp relay, and the engine compartment and glove box lamps directly.
The interior lamps switch, feeds ground to the ground side of the coil on the interior lamp relay. The power output of the interior lamp relay feeds the courtesy lamps.
This is from the 2001 EVTM, so it very well could be different on the '97. I know like '99 to '03 is pretty much the same, so someone else might be by in a while, to say other wise, but right now it seems that unless there is a clicking in the relay for a short amount of time prior to the acutal turn off, relacing the relay wouldn't do much. If the rellay is clicking on and off, prior to th lamps turning off, then maybe a relay relacement might help. This could be an indication that the relay could be having problems pulling in ????
See if you get another opinion, before replacing the relay. I know I got a replacement relay for my fuel pump, and they are not cheap from Ford, for what is a regular relay, just in a Ford size format. Have not found an anftermarket source for these yet.
Good luck

Dome light problems. Replaced relays.
I went ahead and replaced the two relays in question. The dome light and truck bed light are working fine now. All I can figure is that one of these relays would hang up sometimes and keep the dome light on for longer than it should. If anyone else has this problem and wants to try this fix, the relays can be purchased at Autozone for around $12.50 each. The Ford p/n on the relay is F57B-14B192-AA. The Autozone number is #325595 41-5162. It is a GP Sorenson relay # 41-5162. Like the other posts say, if you have a dome light problem, try spraying the door latches with WD 40 first. I had tried all of that and finally decided to take a chance and replace the relays. It solved my problem decribed in my post of a few days ago. Hope this is of some help to others.

Thanks for the info, glad you cured your problem. I'll file this one away, in case someone else comes up with it. I guess another test could have been to use the trailer tow relay, in place of the interior lamp relay ?? Don't know if the '97 has the same config for trailer towing as the '99 + trucks.
