Washer fluid motor question....

I dont drive my truck all that often, and i just realized yesterday that when i push in the the **** to squirt washer fluid nothing happens. i know on my other cars that when your using the washer fluid that the wipers turn on automatically, is it the same on these trucks?? I popped the hood and push in on the **** to see if i could hear the washer motor, and it wasn't making any noise at all, the wipers didn't move either. is my pump out? or since the wipers aren't auto turning on, is something else wrong?? thanks for your help

It's probably the multifunction switch. I've seen where spraying electrical contac cleaner into the end of the signal lever corrected this problem, but if it doesn't, it's more than likely the switch. Do the wipers work on their own?

yea the wipers work if you turn the lever. since i dont know exactly how they worked on these trucks, i did't know if you had to turn the lever to turn the wipers on and then push it to get the fluid...or if it should do both by just pushing the lever. i've got some cleaner i used to clean my mass airflow sensor that tomorrow i will spray into the end of the lever and see if that helps it all. is there anyway to test the motor to rule that out? like with a voltmeter or something? thanks

Sure. Have someone press the button while you check for voltage at the pump. If there is voltage, but no pumping, it's a safe bet that the pump is bad. From personal experience, however, I'm betting on the multifunction switch. When you spray the contact cleaner into the arm, rotate the wiper control part of it (with the key OFF), push the button for the washer, and move it up and down. This will help get the contact cleaner where it needs to go.

I am not sure how it's wired in your truck, but through 1996, there was a relay for the wiper/washer behind the glove box.

wow, work sucks!! i finally had time to spray the end of the signal lever and it worked!!! now when i push in on the lever, the wipers start up and washer fluid starts to spray.
the only thing that sucks is that driver side spray nozel is messed up and is spraying the fluid directly down on the truck and none of it is hitting the window. Whats the easiest way to clean these things? i dont want to stick something in it if its going to mess it up..

Try spraying it with contact cleaner. Seriously. Use a towel strategically to avoid spraying it all over the hood, or you could even spray some into the cap of the can, and then use Q-tips to dip in it and rub on the squirter. If there's a build-up that's clogging it, that should work. If it's just damaged, then you're going to need to replace it.

Where exactly do you have to spray the contact cleaner? I don't remember seeing a hole in the end anywhere. I've read the thread on disassembling the multi-function switch to repair the uncooperative washers, but if just spraying it down will solve the problem, I'll try that first.

BTW I had a nozzle get clogged once, pulled the line open and blew into it, compressed air would work too.

where the wiper part of the lever overlaps the other part, spray the cleaner in the small crack. i put a towel underneath it because most of it missed and dripped off, but just spray a lot and push the lever in and out and twist the wipers off and on. it worked like a charm and was way better than disassembling it

It is not that hard to take apart. This also works if you start having problems with the high beams or turn signals :

MFS Take Apart ( this is where the "grease" that Ford uses starts to crap up a bit ) :
