Keyless Entry Short

Just got my 06 Mark LT back from the dealer to have a mysterous repair made.

Here is what they say happened - the keyless entry keypad had an electrical short, which caused the 'chrome' door handle, keypad, and the plastic surround to 'overheat'. They said it's the first time they saw anything like this happen.

It looked like someone took a blowtorch to the door handle area and melted/blistered the area. Has anyone else had this happen - or is this a fluke?

I've had this happen on a Town Car before. The 12V constant wire from the keypad chafed on the lock rod and took off like a cannon fuse to about midway behind the dash before it stopped. Put burn marks on the outside of the door around the keypad and on the inside of the door where the wire used to run.

That sounds exactly like this - I saw something that resembled a burn mark just next to the keypad - at the edge of the door. Now that I think about it - I think I should have them repair that paint damage as well. What do you think.
