Question Starter Good or Bad???

Just in the last 2 days I`ve had a starter problem. But not sure where to go & start to fix the problem. I have a new battery tons of power from it.
Starts 95% of the time fine. Then I go to start it , Iget a 1/4 crank & then nothing. I get under the truck tap on the starter, then it starts right now. Like I said earlier this has happened twice in the last 2 days . Any ideas where to look first??? The starter cable was replaced under factory warr. right at 36,000 miles & now I have 75,000 miles on the truck.
So any ideas would be helpful !!!
When it stars fine it sound like normal. So please help if you can.
Thanks ahead of time for any help given.

I would start there too with cleaning and tightening connections and if thats not the problem then.. It sounds like the gear arm is sticking possibly.9 times out of 10 if you have to tap on a starter to make it engage thats what it is.You can try taking the starter off and move the gear back and forth to see if it sticks. It should move back and forth fairly easily.Alot of times it just needs to be cleaned with carb cleaner.Spray it out and see if alot of gunk comes out.If this doesnt work then its probably time for a new starter. Good Luck!!

Another place to look is your battery connections. This is overlooked a lot. X

If it starts after taping on the starter then your brushes or probably worn out, or not making good connections. I would take the starter off and carry it to a rebuilder, and have it gone through. If you keep tapping on it to get it to start you will burn up the armarture. It probably already has some bad spots on the armarture.
