HID and Daytime Running Lights
HID and Daytime Running Lights
I'm interested in retrofitting my aftermarket projector headlights with some Audi A6 HID projectors. I live in Canada so my truck has daytime running lights (DRLs). From what I understand about DRLs, the headlights are not supplied with full voltage when my headlight switch is off and the DRLs are on. Now, what will happen if I hook up the HIDs and run them without full voltage? Will the ballasts or bulbs get ruined or will they just not operate at all? I'm thinking that I need to hook up a relay or two somewhere in the connections. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Any luck on a solution to this problem? I also will soon be replacing my stock halogen H13s with bi-xenon H13-3 and am really interested in the work around for the DRL if there is one, or do I just install and the ballast wont power up until I turn the lights on...
Thanks in advance!

I am no expert!
But from my experience with HID and DRL, The DRL system will try to turn them on. But they do not send full voltage to the lights. They my come on for a sec or so, but then they will shut off and you may get some kind of error code!
Also, the constantat turn on / shut off is not good for a HID set up.
I would suggest to by-pass the DRL system!
I hope tghis helps and best of luck!

I agree with gman8473, you will be trying to run the ballast in a "brown out" type condition, and I can;t imagine this is good for them.
Pull your DRL resistor out, and if you have fog lamps, you can make them the DRLs.
