Instument cluster

I was wondering if the instument cluster from a 99- say 2003 f 150 will work on a 98 the only differnce i see between the two is the 97-98 ones are analog odometers and the 99 + up are electonic odometers am i right?

I would like to know that answer also.

I can tell you that the digital speedo / odo will not receive a vss signal from the trans.
I had to change my vss driven gear to get correct readings.
Sooo... if we extrapolate from there, my guess is you will not have digital signals for other things. All I know.

IF you saying that a 98 a truck with an analog odometer (97 + 98) dosent have a speed sensor? then how is it that when i was putting my overhead consloe on last week I discovered that I needed to tap into the Grey/Black wire (VSS) to make this work during this install I had to change a blulb in the instument cluster, and thats where I found the Grey/Black (VSS) wire I taped into for the Overhead consloe wicth seems to work fine, so there has to be signal from the VSS at the gauges.

Am I right or mixed up here?

I don't think that's what he is saying.
A simple example from ford.
In 2002 they went from analog door keypads to digital keypads. They look the same, seem to function the same, but the early one sent a simple ground when you touched any of the five keys. The newer one only does that with three keys, using a 'combined' connection on the other two keys.

See what I mean? They almost work the same, but no way they actually can be swapped, except in odd circumstances. Not something where the dozens of inputs to a cluster can ALL work out in the different design.

Just one example. I don't want to get into square waves and multi plexing wires here. Please.
Chris
