windshield wiper problem, multi function switch

Hi everyone, I am new to the Board. It has a lot of good information. My problem is that I just bought a 1998 F150 v6 last week. It has 122000 miles on it. The first day I had it , I had to use the wipers and they came on as expected. I made a stop and did not turn off the wipers before I exited the vehicle. When I came back a little later and started the truck the wipers did not move, I turned the switch to off and still nothing happened. I then turned off the engine and restarted it and then turned on the wipers and they worked. I thought, a new truck to me , maybe just a glitch. Then this past weekend, it rained both days. I started the truck and the wipers went to half way of the windshield and stopped and have not worked since. Can anyone give me a hint on where to start looking for trouble. I prefer not to take it to a Ford Dealer if it can be avoided. The fuse under the dash is good and I found a relay under the hood, but do not know how to test it.

Sounds like you multi-function switch is worn out. It has served its' purpose well. You can replace this part yourself.

Smile multi function switch - wipers

Thanks for the information about the switch. Now, where is the switch located and how do I get it out? Thanks

1. Remove bottom cover on steering assembly by removing 3 screws, and steering wheel tilt lever.
2. Find fourth hole in bottom cover. With cover off you will see a ball bearing lock mechanism on the iginition switch.
3. Remove negative battery terminal.
4. Put transmission in N and put key position the whole way on (against engage starter position)
5. With key in push on ball bearing with a paper clip or small screwdriver while gently pulling out on key and tumbler.
6. Once out remove top steering cover with tilt wheel the whole way down.
7. Remove Connectors from MF Switch, remove the MF Switch assy. I belive 2 torx screws are holding the switch.
8. Install in reverse orders.
