Problem with auto headlights
Problem with auto headlights
My problem just started this weekend while I was towing my 7x14' enclosed trailer. Truck is a 2000 F150 5.4L SCab 4x4 ORP, w/ towing package.
The problem started with the switch in the 'Auto' setting. The lights started clicking and turning on and off in rapid succesion while I was driving. It was in the middle of the day and I wasn't in the shade. I turned the switch to 'off' and the problem stopped. When I got a chance, I unplugged the trailer and turned the switch back to 'auto'. The lights came on and stayed on.
Later the truck was parked (still middle of the day and not in the shade), shut off, and keys out of the ignition, and the lights came on. The switch was in 'Auto' again. I turned the switch to 'off' and the lights clicked off and came back on. I unhooked the trailer plug again, but it didn't matter. The rest of the day the lights would come on and go off whenever they wanted while the truck was parked. I'm assuming the battery rundown feature kept the battery from being drained.
I drove the truck again today, and if the switch is in the 'auto' position, the headlights are on.
Is the switch bad? the light sensor? a relay somewhere? or what?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
