ac problems in 98 f150xlt 4X4

98 f150 xlt, manual climate control 4.6 engine. AC solinoid wont engage.

Hi folks,

Does anyone out there know where the ac compressor clutch solenoid is, and what it looks like? it is supposed to be in the left side of the engine compartment when all the other components seem to be on the right (passenger)

The problem: while driving at highway speed, the ac suddenly quit. the compressor disengaged and things got warm in the cab...fast!

When I had the chance, I looked under the hood, found everything but the ac solenoid.. unpluged ac clutch cycling switch, shorted both the switch and the cable, no result: did same with ac pressure cutoff switch. same result. found that the ac would turn on for a while, and then quit.

When the clutch is engaged I get ice cold air.

Now it seems that the clutch never engages any more. any ideas what my problem is? thanks in advance...
Ray

On my service manual it is shown on the passenger side. It appears to be coming off the harness that crosses the front of the engine bay (maybe down by the compressor itself - hard to tell from the picture). It appears to be the size of a relay.
