AM Radio static w/engine running

I sometimes listen to AM radio for news and sports. One station in particular (880), is reasonably clear when I am listening to it with the key set to "Accessory." However, when the engine is running, that same station is unlistenable because it is 100% static. What might be the problem?

I understand that when I use the blinkers or use the power windows that there is some static during use. But the problem I am experincing goes way beyond a reasonable amount of static.

Any hints would be appreciated.

Ed

Check connections at both ends of antenna wire usualy you will find that the outer shielded ground is not making a good connection, and usualy it is the antenna end.

I had the same awful reception in the same way, and it was a loose antenna mounting on the fender.
This radio is one of the best I have ever had.
On FM I have strong and weak stations on every slot down at the low end where the older radios will bleed over, this one stays clean.
I believe it has some form of digital processing to accomplish this ability to stay clean on the weak stations.

I think the Fender mounted antenna is for FM only. I'm assuming the AM antenna is probably a Coil inside the radio itself.

Sorry that I can't offer a solution for you at this time

if the static changes with the RPM then its probably a bad ground to the unit.

The FM and AM antenna are one and the same. The antenna coax can also have an open or broken center wire and the shield is ok. Best to check them both out.

Simply going by "Call Name", It's probably not wise to argue on this subject with someone named "HAMRADIO"

Maybe you should check with your dealer and refer to TSB #18384 " popping or quavering from radio on the AM band". Date of bulletin was Jan 01, 2005. I hope this helps.

out of five trucks i have access to including my friends they all have the same problem with the am radio. i think it has something to do with the spark plugs, but i think almost all spark plugs are made so they dont do this.
