'97 F150 Driver's Power Window Problem

Just today my pride and joy turned 170K on the clock, and 10 minutes later the driver's side power window went down 75% of the way and made a bad chattering noise, lowered the rest of the way, and now won't raise unless you pinch the top of the glass and manually raise it about half way or so, then it goes the rest of the way up under power. Seems sorta like some teeth on a gear or something are sheared off and it re-meshes when you raise it above that part of the mechanism.

Questions I have are several:

1.) How do I trouble shoot this repair ? (Supercab Lariat trim)
2.) How tough is the door trim to remove to get to what I think is called the "regulator" ? (The motor runs fine it seems)
3.) Any source other that the dealer for the necessary repair parts ?

Yeah, I know, somebody else is supposed to own this truck by now, but I can't bring myself to spend $35,000 for a new one that won't run or look any better than this one. I get compliments daily from folks that can't believe it's almost 9 and closing in on 200,000 miles.

Thanks for any help or hints on how I should proceed.

Went ahead and opened up the door using the tips I found on the forum, and it turns out the regulator gear was loose due to the breaking of a couple of the spot welds. Drilled and bolted the gear back on and it works but binds due to the thickness of the bolt heads, so it looks like I'm looking for a new regulator. Any opinions of whether the aftermarket parts are worth investigating ? Looks like the the OEM part is $85 or so, and I would hate to rip this back apart just to save $40.
