Intermittent Passenger Side Airbag

My air bag warning light intermittently comes on. I also notice that the passenger side airbag "OFF" light comes on and goes off in relation to the cluster warning light. I keep the dash switch in the off position because my 12 year old rides up front and is under 100lbs. Now, if I "Smack" the airbag on/off switch with the heal of my hand, I can get the dash light to go off and the airbag off light to come on. This leads me to believe that this is either a dirty switch or loose/dirty connnector.
My question is this. I have already unsnapped the dash trim to allow access to the switch but is it OK to unplug it? I mean, if I do it, I'm not gonna end up with a mouthful of airbag am I? Will they deploy?

Thanks
Randy

To be safe before doing anything air bag related disconect battery and turn head lt switch on for several minutes to discharge the backup power supply.

he is correct in tellingyou to disconnect the battery, by simply unplugging the airbag connector, it will not result in deployment. but even with battery disconnected deployment is possible. do not probe any electrical connections as you might set off airbag. My reccomendation if you are gonna do any more than just look is to take it in and have a service professional do it. Well worth the buck. i walked up on air bag repair in midrepair and as I looked in the driver window to see the fault codes, a rookie repairman with the key on turned over the restraint control module (RCM) which has a yaw (rollover) sensor internally. Well the side canopy de[ployed and my head was abouth three inches away. would reccomend a chiropractor over the adjustment my neck took. BE EXTRA SAFE nothing to fool around with

Yeah exactly what i'm afraid of. My brother has been a body man for 20+ years. Had one go off in his face during a repair. It wasnt pretty. I think maybe I'll leave the airbag stuff to the pros. Any way it seems like a broken wire after all. I can move the small wiring harness to the switch and turn the warning light on and off.
Scary stuff.

Thanks
Randy
