1996 Headlight Switch Replacement Procedure

I am having a problem with the headlight switch on my 1996 F150 Longbed (Patriots Edition). The switch when pulled fully out allows only the headlights to illuminate. Dash lights, rear lights and parking lights are extinguished. Can move switch (wiggle) to get all lights temporarily on. Does not remain though. Assuming that the switch is bad or I have a connection problem. What is the procedure for troubleshooting and removal of this switch? Am I on the right track here? Thanks in Rhode Island.

Most likely, you will find that the connector is melted, the best thing to do is replace the connector and the switch. Pull the switch out, on the part you pull, you will see a small slot at the rear, you can slide a very small screwdriver in there to retract the retainer (pull it towards you). Once the **** is off, push the rod back in. Remove the trim around the switch, remove the screws for the mount, unbolt the switch from the mount. You will have to remove the rod from the switch and transfer it to the new one, there is a small pin to depress on the switch, depress it and pull the rod out.
