interior lights staying on
interior lights staying on
I have done a search and didn't turn up any thing that would help me so I will post a question now. My father-in-law has a 97 f150, with the time delay on the interior lights that stay on for a short time after the doors are closed. He told me tonight that the interior lights are sometimes staying on, so he pulled the fuse on them to keep them from staying on. Do any of you all have any ideas what would keep the lights on. I know it is probably a relay but I don't have idea where that relay would be located. I told him to take some W-D 40 and spray the latch to get it see if that would help. I told him I would post on here to see if anyone can help.
Thanks for your time and any information.

Thanks for the reply Mr. Squirrel. I think that he is going to try and see if that will help. I also told him that he may have to pull the door panel off and spray the inside of the latch also.
Thanks again

newbie here. Just registered tonight to ask this same question. LOL
Okay I did the WD 40 thing a while back and no workie. What next?
Mine situation is weird in that the truck won't do it every time. Tonight for example; light stayed on. Look out 20 minutes later & it's still on. I go get in, take off, the light will go out when the truck shifts to second (don't laugh, it's true.....I've had to show more than one buddy to get them to buy it), I turn around go home & park, shut off the thing & the interior light will not come on at all when I open the door to get out. Wife thinks the truck is possessed. The next time it may work normal.
What next? Where is the relay located?

I have the same situation. I have a 1999 supercab with 122k on it, just started today. Got in the truck after lunch and had the door ajar light and the dome light stay on. Opened and slammed the doors a few times to no avail.
BTW, where in the heck is the door switch on these things?
Light goes out on it's own after a few minutes. I still have the original battery in the truck so I realize I'm living on borrowed time there and cannot afford to have a light burning without the engine running for too long. Any ideas here?
Thanks.

I forgot to mention my "door ajar" light usually is on at the same time this happens.
As a temporary fix, I pulled the dome light fuse (#14) tonight. Guess my mag light will now also be my dome light..LOL.
When the weather is a little nicer and I have some time to fool with it, I'll trace the schematic & fix it right.
Any help with locating the relay would be appreciated.

Its a 150 thing for sure. There are HUNDREDS of posts all over the Internet onthis. WD40 is the fix. While I've never seen the actual switch, I know its there - most likely a cam type roller switch that changes with the door mechanism when it rotates to the shut position. Take a screwdriver and rotate it by hand - your light will go out. (kinda handy when cleaning and jamming to the tunes without the warning dinger).
Anyhow, I'm guessing that the original light grease applied at the factory loses its sense of humor at some point and gums up the door switch cam. The WD40 isn't working because its a lube, its working because its a solvent. It took mine a day before the ajar light started behaving again. Trust the WD40, it will work. If some is good, more is better. Drench the sucker!

Just my .02,
I ran into this problem too a while ago (about 2 years ago.) I would drive the truck home from work or whatever, and then park it, and the interior lights would stay on.
I would start the truck back up and the 'door ajar' light was on with all doors shut. After some good luck and searching, I found that the weather stripping on the 3rd door of the truck was loose, and I guessed that the sensor on the passenger door was not engaging properly. I took some liquid nails and glued the inside of the loose part of the strip, and pushed it back onto the door and held it in place for about 10-15 seconds until it bonded. It dried fine, and I never had another issue with it. I was just surprised that the liquid nails adhered to the rubber.
Hope that helps, and good luck.
[Edited to also add that WD-40 is one of the best things ever invented, regardless!]
