Question Tailgate Locks

I am not sure if this is the right forum or not but here goes. I have a 2001 XLT SCab and it has a lock on the tailgate. Thats all well and good but it seems like sometimes it just randomly locks itself and I have to have the key to open it. I have never knowingly locked it. Is there some sort of stupid power lock or something on it? Is it just locking itself from the vibration of shutting the gate. It is not a problem most of the time but its something that is driving me crazy on occasion. Never needed the key to open a tailgate before. I guess my truck is finally smarter than I am.

Thanks in advance!!

Mike

Mike, do a search in the forum...I've seen this discussed in detail before. If memory serves me, it has something to do with a loose linkage rod.

NO our F150's did not come with a power tailgate lock from the factory...HOWEVER you can install one if you wish. There are plenty of aftermarket items that work.

There may be a TSB on this.

EDIT: Correction there IS a TSB at the NHTSA. Check out Service Bulletin Num : 16602
