1997 f150 battery light on

Hi,

The battery light on my truck came on today, at first it came on and it would go off as I increased RPM, I disconnected the battery, cleaned posts and connectors, checked for fluid in the battery and reconnected it, now it is on all the time. The gauge in the instrument panel shows it is charging OK.

What are the other obvious things to check before I must take it into the shop?

Thanks!

Tony

your truck is 7 years old....If your batt. is orginal than it is past or near it's life cycle, may be your charging system need s to be looked at.

My bet is the alternator. Now I might be wrong, I haven't taken an auto class for about 3 years, and I knew this for certain at one time, but I think the higher revs will help charge the battery. So it wouldn't charge it enough at low RPM's, you get the idea.

Ofcourse I would get a quality check, but it will either be the battery or the alternator.

Well, toook the battery out and had it checked, it was good... bummer... that means it must be the alternator, took it off without too much struggle, had it checked and bingo! Darned thing was bad (good bet sporky...).

Two hundred bucks less in my xmas budget, a few busted knuckles, some heavy duty swearing and we're back on the road again, now it's front brakes chaging time, it never ends...

Alternator is on the way out.
You should be able to get a heavy duty alternator for less than $150.00. This will give you a little more XMAS than you thought.
