Cannot get truck out of "Park" since jumping switch

My brake switch failed on my 2001 F150. The original problem

was the brake lights wouldn't come on during braking. During

trouble shooting, my freind was attemting to jump out the brake

switch from a hot wire to all the other wires one at a time. His

objective was to get the brake lights to come on if supplied with

power. He was doing this using a short piece of wire directly at

the switch/harness connection. We both heard a

pop. Sounded like a fuse blew but, we have not been able to

locate a blown fuse. Now, the only way I can start my truck is to

turn the ignition on about half-way. This allows me to go

into "Neutral", start the truck, go to "Drive". We're pretty sure

we've checked all the fuses under the dash and under the hood.

However, if anyone knows the exact fuse to check or, any ideas

as to something else we might check would be appreciated very

much! Oh by the way, I did replace the brake switch and the

brake lights work fine now. If only I could shift into drive

normally! Ray

WOW.... Sound pretty bad. I would normally say the neutral safety switch but you can still get it started in neutral. Did you check the numerous fuses in the engine compartment also. Did you use a test light to check the fuses? An inexpensive test light is a must. Good luck

I can start the truck in "Neutral". Actually I can start the truck in "Park", it just won't allow me to shift OUT of park but, it does start. By turning the ignition switch halfway toward the "on" position allows me to shift into "Neutral". Only from the "Neutral" position will it allow me to shift into "Drive" or "Reverse".

I just discovered the windshield wipers are not working either. Does anyone know which fuse controls the wipers? Could the Neutral switch cause the wipers to not work? Ray

Brake light switch also controls a selinoid that locks up the shift lever. ( they want you to put your foot on brake with engine running i order to shift out of park) That is a little different from not being able to start the truck at all. You might have fried the control for the release selinoid. Maybe someone has a wire color or schematic for that and can give you somewhere to check.
