alternator stinks

My 98 f150 4x4 4.6 auto began smelling like electrical fire the other day. I was hauling hay and would smell it everytime I got out to unload. No lights no ampmeter fluctuations no symptoms at all. Just smelled. By the end of the day the odor is gone. I have driven to work two times 35 miles each way with no problems. Never saw smoke or melted wiring. What is going on here? Thanks in advance, Rob Oh yea truck has 80 k. I would have bet the alternator was dead. Rob

look along your exhaust...I'd bet you caught a piece a plastic ( Wal Mart bag, ice bag) I caught one to off the road and it stunk every time I'd stop..and it took a while to burn off.
