Why do you drain the battery all the way down? I've maybe lead a sheltered life and don't understand why that needs to be done.

the battery was dead to start with, and when i hooked up the terminals backwards it put a small amount of charge on it. a friend advised me that it would be best if i completly drained the battery, and started with a clean charge before i tried to charge the battery. dont know if this is true so i tried it. i guess it didnt hurt.

that was a good ide to drain the battery down after having it hooked up backwards it could have reversed the battery's polarity and actually charged backwards and then if you tryed to charge the normal way it could have blown up.

i dunno but i think part of your problem might be autozone alternators.
and if the battery is good and charged and let to sit 3 days and die there has to be a parrasitic drain on it somewhere.

did you find the diode yet?

i am still hunting for the diode, still have not been able to locate the main computer. i found the 2 boxes that i thought were the puter but advance said to keep looking. i checked behind the glove box, advance told me it was above the fuse box in the cab, checked right side pannel of passenger dash, not many more places to look, i traced the main wiring harness, that was the only 2 boxes that i could find. i really appreciate the help here. this is a cool site. happpppy to have found it.

the book shows the diode in slot 12 of the power distribution box the one under the hood.

detatch the cable from the neg. battery. locate the PCM connector in the engine compartment on the drivers side of the firewall. Remove the connector retaining screws and unplug the connector.
from within the cab locate the module under the left side kick panel remove the retaining screws and remove the module.

caution to avoide damage to the internal circuitry caused by static electricity be sure to ground yourself to a metal component before handling the PCM

page 4-31 haynes repair manual 80-95 ford pick-ups and broncos

its right behind the parking brake pedal it looks like.
